2024 Roundabout Magnificent Seven Marathon Team
Magnificent Seven
My Story
This year we have the fantastic team of Jane, Ellen, Alex, Adam, Mark, Anya and Xav, all taking on the 26 mile challenge to support Roundabout!
Xav's words on why he is taking part:
Having previously worked for Roundabout for ten years as a therapist, I know first hand the huge impact that Roundabout has on improving the happiness and wellbeing of young people in London.
Hundreds of young people benefit from the work of the dedicated Roundabout therapists and wider team, and it is an honour to run with the Roundabout name on my t-shirt.
They also have the best Christmas parties, and I'm hoping that running for them this year might help me to gatecrash this year's festive ding dong even though I no longer work for them! Such is my addiction to mince pies, I will go to any lengths...
Ellen Taylor - why I am taking part:
I have worked for Roundabout Dramatherapy for nearly 3 years but have followed the charity's journey for much longer. From working in schools, I see every day the impact the charity has on children and young people. Roundabout support some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the country in some of the most deprived areas of London. Dramatherapy helps support their mental health and wellbeing which in turn supports their academic success. It is a privalege to be part of their work and to support this fundraising event. Every January I proimise myself to get more exerise and spend more time outside but I never manage it. The virtual marathon was the ideal opportunity to get me motivated and spring is the perfect time to be outdoors. Bring it on!
Adam - "Why?!" (Adam, Mile 1 of 26.2):
After running the London Marathon back in 2019 for the Dementia Revolution, I vowed to myself never again. But along came Roundabout and the rest, as they say, is History. I feel so privileged to be part of such an extradordinary organisation, supporting those most in need in our communities. Whether it be working with vulnerable young people or older adults with dementia (and most inbetween!), the team work so hard to help others take steps towards positive mental health. So, I hope that by putting one foot in front of the other along the Surrey Hills, I can spread the word and encourage you all to support Roundabout so they can continue their invaluable work! If that's not a reason "Why?!" then I don't know what is!
Jane Why?
Well I have asked myself that a few times over the last few weeks, especially when it's cold and raining.
I was encouraged by the lovely Anya to take part and help raise funds for this amazing local charity supporting people of all ages with mental health challenges.
By supporting us and Roundabout you are helping Roundabout provide support to more families going through difficult times.
Thank you in advance for any help and please if you see us around (and about) in the next few weeks and especially on April 21st please give us a wave, or a jelly baby - we'll need it!
Alex - why I am taking part
I started walking during the covid pandemic as I had a lot of free time and since then I have continued to walk regularly. I was recently asked if I would like to take part in the virtual marathon as I feel it would be a great challenge and something to look forward to and all for a great cause.
I have known about the charity roundabout for many years and they have done fantastic work in the community and will continue to do fantastic work for as long as they are around. So to be able to attempt this challenge for roundabout is something that motivates me, so I’ll give it my best!!
Mark : Why I am taking part again!
This is my third marathon for Roundabout. I'm walking for Roundabout because they support vulnerable children and adults in times of need. They do this in a way that's non-threatening, creative and easy to engage with, so clients look forward to the sessions.
Anya's words on why she is taking part
So this will be my 6th Marathon. I last pounded the streets of London for 26.2 miles exactly 10 years ago. I said on that day never again. But here we are.
Running with Jane as my partner has been great. She is definitely my more organised better half and a much better navigator. So doing the London Marathon My Way has meant we can explore our local area in depth - 26 miles is a long way. I have visited parts of the common I’ve never been to before and found the Nature Reserve in Ashstead.
So why for Roundabout? They are a charity that transform the lives of vulnerable people of all ages (3-90) to enhance mental health. In my job as a headteacher and in my life outside work with friends and family I see the rise in people struggling with mental health and it is huge. The services to support this are severely limited.
Running for Roundabout seems so right as they transform lives for those coping with trauma, disabilities and challenging mental health.
Please give any amount to make the long hours of training and the day of the marathon - 21st April worth it. Thank you.
